The complete approval process from the time Monash Abroad receives your application until your Student Pass approval letter is sent to you may take approximately 12 weeks (or more).
When preparing your application, you should also factor in the time you, your home university, or your agent will require in order to prepare your application and this may add many weeks or months to the application processing time.
Monash Abroad office carries out the initial assessment of your application, ensuring that your application is complete and that you have met the eligibility criteria, including English Language proficiency. In the case of exchange nominations, the exchange balance between Monash and your university is checked, unless an agreement has been finalised before the nominations are sent to Monash.
Study plan approval
Once the initial assessment has been completed, your application is sent to each of the schools for your choice of units to be approved. The Schools are solely responsible for assessing and approving your selected units based on your academic background and if you have satisfied the pre-requisites of the units.
The experienced enrolment staff in each school assess the exchange and study abroad applications but they are often referred to academic staff responsible for the specific units. This means that your study plan may require multiple approvals in more than one school, a process which may take approximately two weeks (from the date the application is received by Monash Abroad). Schools may also request for unit outlines and other materials from your home university required to assess your suitability for a particular selected unit. These requests to you will normally be managed through the Monash Abroad office. The Monash Abroad staff continuously monitor the length of time for your application to be approved by the Schools. We are unable to proceed to the next stage until the study plan is approved.
Offer of admission
As soon as your study plan has been approved, Monash Abroad will issue a formal offer of admission. This will be in the form of a letter, emailed directly to you and copied to your home university or agent, except in cases where partners or agents have specifically requested the offer to be sent directly to them. Accompanying the offer letter will be a list of your pre-approved units, acceptance form, on-campus application form and a Monash Abroad Pre-Arrival Guide.
Acceptance of offer
You must sign and return the acceptance form together with the required documents by scanning and emailing them to Monash Abroad by the date stipulated in the offer letter. The offer lapses after this period.
Also included in the offer package will be payment requests for the following fees:
- Student Pass fee which includes a compulsory health check and medical insurance
- Tuition fee for one semester (if you are a study abroad student)
- On-campus accommodation which we highly recommend to all our exchange and study abroad students.
Student Pass application
We will be able to apply for your Student Pass with the Immigration Department of Malaysia only after you have accepted your study offer and submitted the necessary documents and fees (if any) as advised in your offer letter. As the approval for your Student Pass by the immigration office may take up to eight weeks (or more), please respond to your offer as soon as possible once you have received it from us.
Unit enrolment and study timetable
Once your Student Pass is approved and sent to you, we will enrol the approved units you have selected in your acceptance form before you arrive. You will have the opportunity to allocate your class timetable after your arrival with our online tutorial allocation system called Allocate+. To use this timetabling system, you would need to have activated your Monash computer network account called Authcate. A detailed step-by-step guide on timetabling and account activation would be included in your pre-arrival guide.
Studying at another Monash campus is easy
If you are an existing Monash student, studying at an international Monash campus is simple and ideal for an exchange experience.
If you are a Monash student who would like to study at Monash Malaysia for a semester or two, it can be easily arranged. You will come on an intercampus exchange but remain enrolled at your home campus. All your units taken in Monash Malaysia will be listed on your academic transcript, similar to Monash Australia but the only difference will be your exchange experience in vibrant, captivating and exotic Malaysia.
You could also be eligible for our special Malaysia package if you are an Australian or South African Monash student.
What can I study?
Monash Malaysia offers a wide selection of units for you to study. While unit syllabuses are similar across all Monash campuses, you will find that Monash Malaysia offers localised units providing a unique exchange experience here.
Popular localised units that are offered at Monash Malaysia include for example, the Malaysian Studies, Contemporary Issues in Asia from the School of Arts and Social Sciences. Other interesting units include Environmental Science: A Southeast Asian Perspective offered at the School of Science as well as Leadership in Asia, Business in Asia and Islamic Business offered at the School of Business. For language enthusiasts, the Malay Language is a non-credit earning unit, ideal for those who wish to learn the local language during their exchange in Malaysia. How much will it cost?
The cost of living in Malaysia is affordable, coupled with the possibility for low-cost travel around the South East Asia region during the semester break and end of semester. Your exchange to Monash Malaysia would also not incur additional tuition fees as fees are paid to your home campus, just as they would be if you weren’t on an exchange.
However, accommodation, travel and entertainment costs are not included in your fees, therefore, you are advised to budget for these items just as you would at home. You will also need to take into consideration the cost of compulsory insurance and visas.
The Monash Abroad Travel Scholarships are also available for Monash students when planning for their exchange to Malaysia. Many externally funded bodies or the governments also offer scholarships for students to study overseas. Consult the Monash Abroad office to find out what is available to you before you leave home.
