Schedule Waste Management
Chemical waste falls within the definition of 'Scheduled Waste' under the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
- "Scheduled waste" means any waste falling within the categories of waste listed in the First Schedule of Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.
Chemical waste shall be disposed of in an ethical manner and according to the local law requirements and guidelines:
- Environmental Quality Act 1974.
- Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005.
- Guidelines on the Disposal of Chemical Wastes from Laboratories.
- Guidelines for Packaging, Labelling and Storage of Scheduled Wastes in Malaysia.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) shall always be referred to for the appropriate chemical disposal method.
All waste generators are responsible for identifying and classifying chemical waste, properly packaging it, and affixing appropriate labels to ensure safe handling, transportation, and final disposal.
Academic staff or supervisors are responsible for ensuring that the person generating chemical waste complies with the local law and regulations by giving them proper instructions or training before the commencement of work that utilises chemicals.
OHSE Unit shall assist in conducting training for waste generators and laboratory technicians and advise on chemical waste handling and disposal.
Labelling on chemical waste shall have the following required information:
- Waste code (Refer to First Schedule of EQ (SW) Regulations 2005)
- Applicable hazard pictogram
(Refer to Third Schedule of EQ (SW) Regulations 2005) - Date of waste first generated
- Name, address and telephone number of the waste generator
Chemical waste generated, treated, and disposed of must be recorded in an inventory form and retained for up to three years from the date the scheduled waste was generated
