HOS Welcome Message
Dear students,
Greetings and a warm welcome to Monash University Malaysia, particularly the School of Engineering and the School of Information Technology (IT). I am Professor Anthony Guo, the Head of School for both the Schools of Engineering and IT.
Congratulations on choosing Monash Malaysia for your academic journey. Monash is globally recognized, and consistently ranked within the top 100 universities by all four major indicators (THE, QS, US News and Shanghai Ranking), one of the only 55 universities worldwide with such distinction. Additionally, the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia acknowledges us as Competitive SETARA status.
The School of Engineering and the School of IT are integral components of their respective Faculties at Monash University. We provide courses of the same high quality as those in Australia, and you obtain the same undifferentiated degree. Engineering courses are fully accredited by the professional bodies, the Board of Engineers (BEM) and Engineers Australia (EA), while IT and Computer Science courses are fully recognised by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) and MQA, reflecting our commitment to delivering a superior and internationally-recognized Engineering and IT degrees at the Malaysia campus. With an overwhelming emphasis on quality-driven education and research, our students have demonstrated exceptional performance, with notable achievements such as four engineering students winning the prestigious Sir John Monash Medal in the last 8 years – the highest honour bestowed by Monash to graduating students annually.
In addition, Engineering and IT at Monash Malaysia strongly emphasize design and industry experience to ensure an outstanding student experience. Engineering students engage in design throughout their four-year program, while IT students have the opportunity to participate in the highly acclaimed Industry-Based Learning module, supported by Industry Scholarships. Both schools value Industry Experience and Graduate Employability as our value proposition, and encourage a student-led engagement and partnership with industry, as exemplified by the Monash Industrial Engineering + Information Technology Engagement (Mind Engine) Expo 2023, organized by Monash University Malaysia Engineering Club (MUMEC) and Monash University Malaysia Tech Club (MUMTEC). This Expo attracted 54 companies/industry partners with 900 registered participants throughout the week, underscoring our commitment to industry exposure for our graduates.
To further enhance students’ learning experience, the School implements initiatives such as the Student Leadership Network (SLN), External Design Competition (EDC), Undergraduate Research Opportunities (UROP), and Community Engagement (via Engineers without Borders). The multicultural and international environment, along with overseas experiences through the Monash Abroad program, provides opportunities to interact with diverse cultures and perspectives. I encourage you to participate in these initiatives to develop valuable soft skills such as teamwork and leadership that will significantly benefit you throughout your careers.
The University’s teaching and learning landscape has evolved significantly due to advancements in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI), posing both challenges and opportunities. Monash University emphasizes cultivating responsible and ethical use of AI tools in education and research, equipping you with critical and future-focused skills for an ever-evolving work environment. Additionally, as the world transitions into a post-pandemic society, the University continues to curate various online learning resources to complement on-campus student learning.
I strongly encourage you to become digitally savvy, continuously acquiring IT skills to collaborate online and with AI tools. This will enhance your proficiency in independent learning, time and task management, and interaction with peers and teams. These experiences and skills are highly valued by future employers, enabling you to work effectively from anywhere in the world.
