Why did you decide to pursue Computer Science?

During my Pre-U program in MUFY, I was actually taking units with the intention of pursuing for Chemical Engineering course. Upon graduating, however, I found that Physics were not really my cup of tea and at that time, I was constantly intrigued by the various breakthroughs and advances made in the field of technology as well as the huge potential it offers, and that was how the decision is made.

Please tell us briefly about your current research.

I’m currently working on facial similarities and differences based on ethnicities. While there are many splendid researches done on ethnicity classification, our approach is slightly different in the sense that we are trying to discover exactly what are these features, or even patterns, that identify and distinguish people from different ethnicity backgrounds by using several handcrafted features, in the hope of providing a different perspective to the problem at hand. With this information, it can potentially serve as an insight to the reason behind false positives encountered in facial recognition applications as well as a basis for ethnicity-based facial expression analysis.

Has studying at Monash met your expectations so far?

Yes, it is a splendid journey. Overall, all the materials taught are relevant and up to date, which is an extremely important quality in the course of Computer Science. Integration of group works helps to prepare students for future work environment and the staff are always ready to lend a hand. Not to mention the availability of many informal learning spaces that improves the study environment in campus.

What opportunities did you participate in while at Monash? E.g. conferences, study trips, volunteer programs, student exchange, etc.

Unfortunately, no.

Did you have any industry exposure/placements while studying at Monash? If so, do you think it has made a difference for you in terms of career preparation?

While I was eligible for an opportunity to participate in the Industry Based Learning program, in the end I did not go for it as I was already in the middle of preparing for my Final Year Project at the time the offer is made. However, while I was doing my honours program, another opportunity in the form of research assistant came knocking and I took it. Along the way, it occurs to me that communication is crucial and that a mutual understanding between co-workers is needed in order for the whole operation to go smoothly. In short, while it is important to own the hard skills required for the task, interpersonal communication skill is something that should not be overlooked and by mastering this skill, it will undoubtedly help to avoid many unwanted situations in my future career.

What are your career goals, or your future plans?

For now, I aim to complete my honours thesis with all that I’ve got. Since Artificial Intelligence is one of the hottest trends and I’ve always had interest in this field, if possible, I would like to pursue a career in this region.
