Major Radiation and Biohazard Spill

  1. Activate break-glass alarm and evacuate the immediate area.
  2. Notify Security on 333 or 03 - 5514 6333.

⚠    Isolate the hazard — Restrict access to contaminated area with a barricade and signage.

If safe to do so:

Treat serious injuryThis over-rides the need to decontaminate (This is determined by the First Aider).
Remove  Contaminated ClothingUse emergency shower if necessary to decontaminate yourself.

Place contaminated clothing in a sealed bag and ensure area is isolated.
NotifyYour local Safety Officer and/or Radiation Supervisor/Worker must be notified immediately.

Notify Monash University's OHS Radiation Protection Officer if applicable.
EvacuateFollow evacuation procedures if required.
Clean UpCleanup MUST be done AFTER a discussion with the Safety Officer or Radiation Protection Officer to determine best clean up strategy.

Major Biohazard Spill

  1. Use an EMERGENCY SHOWER if required.
  2. Avoid the creation of aerosols.
  3. Notify Security on 333 or the 03 - 5514 6333.

NotifyYour local Biosafety Officer and Safety Officer must be notified immediately.

EvacuateFollow evacuation procedures if required.
Use a damp cloth to mop up spillsDo NOT spray substances on spills as this may create aerosols/airborne liquid/vapour.
Clean with a Biohazard spill kitThese are supplied with disinfectants. Always use a P2 face mask, gloves and laboratory coat.
