Medical Biosciences
About Us
Medical Biosciences where scientific inquiry meets real-world impact in health and medicine.
In Medical Biosciences, we dive deep into the molecular and cellular basis of health and disease. Our programs are built to develop critical thinkers who can bridge laboratory research with clinical relevance. Students gain hands-on experience with current technologies, learn how to ask the right scientific questions, and build the skills needed to translate science into solutions.
Our academics are more than lecturers—they’re active researchers tackling some of the most urgent issues in biomedicine, from infectious diseases and cancer to neurodegeneration and drug development. Their work shapes how we understand disease mechanisms and drives innovation in diagnostics and therapies.
With a strong foundation in research, ethics, and interdisciplinary collaboration, we prepare graduates for a wide range of career paths—whether it's medical research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or postgraduate clinical studies.
If you’re curious about how the human body works and passionate about improving lives through science, Medical Biosciences is where your journey begins.

Overview of the Discipline
Medical Biosciences is a core scientific discipline within the School of Pharmacy that explores the molecular, cellular, and physiological foundations of human health and disease. It encompasses areas such as biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, molecular biology, and cell biology, offering a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that drive disease progression and treatment responses.
Our work lays the foundation for new discoveries in medicine, enabling the translation of scientific knowledge into clinical application. The insights gained from medical biosciences drive innovation in drug discovery, precision medicine, and diagnostic technologies—ultimately improving patient care and public health outcomes.
Our discipline focuses on:
- Cancer Biology and Oncology Research
- Neurological and Neurodegenerative Disorders
- Metabolic and Endocrine Disease Mechanisms
- Dermatological Science and Cosmetic Research
Through cutting-edge laboratory work and collaborative research initiatives, we aim to solve pressing health challenges and prepare the next generation of scientists and healthcare innovators.
Our Research Areas
We are recognised for our expertise in several high-impact research domains:
1. Oncology
Our cancer research teams study the biological mechanisms underlying tumour growth, metastasis, drug resistance, and immunotherapy response—particularly in devastating cancers such as brain, breast, lung, ovarian and prostate cancers. Leveraging advanced preclinical platforms—including organ-on-chip systems, 3D in vitro tumour cultures, and in vivo models— critical insights of cancer progression and therapeutic response are investigated. Our research also focuses on the development of nanocarriers to enhance the targeted delivery of therapeutic agents. Through strong collaborations with clinical collaborators, our research is strategically positioned to translate laboratory discoveries into innovative, targeted therapies for cancer patients.
2. Neurology
We investigate the biological underpinnings of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, with a focus on novel drug targets, nanodrug development for neuroprotection, treatment for neuropathy and biomarkers for early detection.
3. Metabolic Diseases
Our researchers investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and a spectrum of metabolic and endocrine disorders. Their work advances the development of targeted interventions and evidence-based strategies for the prevention, early detection, and management of these increasingly prevalent conditions.
4. Cosmetic and Dermatological Science
We are a national leader in Cosmetic Science, driving innovation through clinical research on skin, hair and scalp health, anti-ageing phytonutrients, dermatological conditions, innovative delivery systems and microbiome-based therapies. With strong industry engagements and international collaborations, we conduct translational research that bridges the bench to beauty and healthy skin.
