Internship Journey: From SupBiotech to Future Microbiome Research Centre

"Strengthening research ties across borders."

As part of my studies at SupBiotech, the School of Engineering in Biotechnology in France, I had the privilege to join the Monash Microbiome Research Centre at the School of Pharmacy, Monash University Malaysia, for a three-month internship.

During my internship, I contributed to projects focused on understanding microbial communities and their role in health and nutrition. I assisted PhD students in DNA extraction and metabolomics sample preparation for the DGBI cohort study. I also took part in a small research project to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from traditional Malaysian fermented foods: Cencaluk and Belacan. Specifically, I was involved in confirming the identity of these LAB strains and to assess their probiotic potential through growth and tolerance experiments. The hands-on training provided me with valuable technical skills and deeper insights into the challenges and opportunities of microbiome research.

Beyond my time in the laboratory, I was warmly welcomed into a diverse and collaborative team whose guidance and generosity made my experience truly enriching. I am especially grateful to Associate Professor Chong Chun Wie and Dr. Yin Yin Thoo for their mentorship, and to the Microbiome Research Centre team for their support and friendship throughout this journey.
