Professor Banerjee highlighting the history and evolution of zinc-manganese batteries

The Centre for Net-Zero Technology welcomed Professor Sanjoy Banerjee from the City University of New York to Monash University Malaysia campus as our first Net-Zero Speaker Series for 2026.

At the session held on 12 January 2026, Professor Banerjee, Founder of United Electric Power Inc. regaled the audience with the story of his journey in developing rechargeable zinc manganese dioxide batteries, charting their path from the laboratory to industrial scale application and showcasing their impact in large commercial data centre operations.

The event was attended by staff and students from Monash University Malaysia, as well as external visitors from private industries and higher education institutes. Professor Banerjee also took the opportunity to answer pertinent questions from the floor as well as providing sound advice to early-career researchers on potentially commercialising their own research in the future.
