Theme 3 - Sustainable Urban Energy Solutions (Sus-UES)

Theme 3 on Sus-UES aspires to promote and enforce the sustainability transitions in the community, industry and nation; and to be a world-class research group in renewable energy and smart grid areas. Sus-UES focuses on renewable energy generation, forecasting, planning and operation of the smart grid, to mitigate climate change, and promote global sustainability transitions. Sus-UES also aims to help industries and community stakeholders, in the transition of conventional fossil fuel, buildings, and cities, into renewable energy resources, smart offices, and smart cities, respectively.

The research scope in this theme will include but are not limited to:

  • Load demand and renewable energy forecasting with machine learning
  • Electrifying smart cities with green energy
  • Concentrated solar photovoltaic generation
  • Piezoelectric generation for smart cities
  • Electric vehicle coordination and transportable energy storage integration in smart grid
  • Peer-to-peer energy trading with blockchain
  • Resilience grid operation during natural disaster (e.g., flooding)
