Rural Populations in SouthEast Asia

"Unlocking the Potential of the Microbiome to Promote Health Equity in Rural Communities"

The event brought together distinguished researchers from Malaysia and Japan to explore the unique challenges faced by the Indigenous communities (Orang Asli) in Malaysia.  Discussions covered the impact of dietary habits on gut microbial diversity, with a focus on rural and urban populations, and examined the social factors influencing mortality and fertility within the Orang Asli. Researchers also explored the role of traditional lifestyles in shaping the gut microbiome, antimicrobial resistance in indigenous populations, and the effects of urbanization on the gut and skin microbiomes of these communities. The workshop offered a valuable opportunity for researchers to exchange knowledge and insights, furthering collaboration in addressing the health challenges faced by rural populations in Southeast Asia.
