Inclusive Education Practice
Inclusive Education Practice (IEP) refers to designing and delivering learning experiences that enable all students, regardless of their backgrounds, abilities or learning preferences, to fully participate, engage and succeed.
Inclusive education:
- Recognises individual learner strengths and capabilities
- Accommodates individual learner requirements by offering flexibility
- Commits to removing barriers to participation
- Ensures every learner feels valued and supported
A key part of inclusive practice is reducing the cognitive load. This can be achieved through strategies such as:
- Presenting small and focused chunks of content (e.g., short videos, presentations of 15 slides or fewer)
- Minimising distractions (e.g., only use images/videos with a clear purpose)
- Providing clear and concise instructions in plain English
- Explaining the meaning and purpose of activities, content and assessment
- Highlighting critical learning elements (e.g., ‘must know’ versus ‘nice to know’)
- Using mixed media for a varied experience (e.g., listening or watching versus reading)
- Connecting previous, current and future learning with real-life applications
- Maintaining consistency of structure and navigation
- Defining time frames and schedules (e.g., task due dates)
- Outlining assessment decision-making processes (e.g., rubrics and exemplars)
Inclusive education can be supported by integrating the Universal Design for Learning principles with high-impact teaching strategies:

Inclusive and effective learning environments can be achieved through differentiated instruction, which involves adapting your teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learners, based on students’ readiness, interest and learning profiles. You can start by adjusting just one of the following:
Together with equitable assessment practices, culturally responsive pedagogy and intentional community building, inclusive education creates learning spaces where diversity is valued and recognised as a source of academic excellence and innovation.
