About this example

Students will simulate a pharmacist-patient consultation by engaging in a structured role-play with GenAI (ChatGPT). Students select one scenario from the list provided and conduct a consultation in which they gather a complete medication and symptom history, identify the likely primary-care issue and apply pharmacy practice principles to formulate safe and appropriate advice.

Students will submit:

A transcript of the AI role-play (pharmacist-patient conversation)
A brief reflective report explaining:
The primary-care issue identified
What pharmacy practice principles were applied, and how
Any limitations or concerns about using AI in consultation

Learning outcomes:

Describe and apply the guiding principles of pharmacy practice
Identify and describe common healthcare issues in primary care

This assessment was designed to give students an opportunity to practise pharmacist-patient interaction in a flexible and low-risk environment. Allowing students to select from multiple scenarios increases engagement and enables personalised learning. Using GenAI enables repeated practice, iterative improvement and enhanced preparedness for OSCE examinations.
1. Brief students on the assessment expectation and how AI functions as a simulated patient
2. Conduct a demonstration using the provided started prompt
3. Guide students on ethical and critical use of AI
4. Provide guidance on how to write a concise and clinically reasoned reflection
- Students will feel more confident and less overwhelmed because they can practise multiple times before submitting their best attempt
- The requirement to produce a reflection will help students articulate their reasoning and reinforce links between practice principles and primary-care problem identification

Try it out

This design requires a medium level of effort to implement.

1. Create a bank of clinical scenarios
2. Test each scenario using the chosen AI tool to ensure realistic patient behaviour
3. Provide a structured prompt and clear expectations for history-taking, advice and safety consideration
4. Require both transcript and reflection so that students’ clinical reasoning is observable and assessable
- Begin this assessment by defining the unit learning outcomes being assessed
- Design a variety of scenarios that will support students in achieving these learning outcomes
- Provide clear instructions, an AI starter prompt and guiding questions so students understand the expectations
- Gather student feedback after implementation to further improve the design of the assessment in the future.
Verbal explanation
- For a large class, educators may conduct a peer teaching moment where learners explain principles and primary care to peers, allowing educators to observe clarity and accuracy
- For a small class, educators may conduct a 5-10-minute oral follow-up with students based on their work
