One Week Outage to High Performance Computing and Research Data Services

Outage to High Performance Computing and Research Data ServicesFrom Saturday 14 January to Sunday 22 January 2017, there will be a complete outage of all eResearch infrastructure. Monash University is establishing a modern environment for future research computing needs. During the months of January and February, eSolutions will be moving all eResearch computing capabilities from their current location to a new modern data centre. The data centre move will occur in two phases.

Phase one - 14 January to 22 January 2017 - Relocation of some eResearch infrastructure

The eResearch infrastructure services listed here will be unavailable from Saturday 14 January to Sunday 22 January 2017. During this week, users will not be able to log in to any high performance computing and most research data storage systems

Infrastructure affected:

  • High Performance Computing Systems (MASSIVE M2, M3 and a co-scheduled outage on M1 to undertake upgrades, MonARCH, Monash Campus Cluster and partnership nodes).
  • GitLab (Archiving).
  • Characterisation Virtual Laboratory.
  • Research Data Storage Services (LaRDS, Vault and Market shares on SONAS infrastructure rds.erc.monash.edu, also known as Sargas).
  • Store.Monash and Store.Synchrotron (web portals will continue to be accessible, but researchers will not be able to access any existing data on the service. You will be able to continue to run the MyData app to ingest new data and this data will be accessible through the web portal).

Phase two - early February to March 2017

Brief Research Cloud instance outages and minor performance degradation.

During phase two our Research Cloud will be moved gradually, while keeping the overall service online. Existing Research Cloud instances/VMs will be offline while migrated to the new facility with downtime expected to be limited to one hour each time. This will happen from early February to March 2017.

Infrastructure components affected:

  • The NeCTAR Research Cloud at Monash (monash-02 availability zone).
  • Cloud Storage (Ceph, RDS-NAS Windows shares, NFS shares, object storage and block storage to the Research Cloud)
