Theme 2 - Biotransformation (BIO-Trans)
Theme 2 on BIO-Trans targets to become a global advanced biotransformation group by developing pre-commercialised marketable systems that meets the energy security demands and net-zero carbon emissions target of the industry. Our bioenergy research utilises sources such as lignocellulosic feedstocks (i.e., agricultural and forestry residues), non-food crops (i.e., grasses, miscanthus, algae), industrial waste, and residue streams to reach zero or low carbon impact. BIO-Trans will also contribute towards a net-zero carbon economy through transforming, substituting, reuse, recycling and efficient use of fuels, chemicals and materials with cleaner and safer alternatives. We will also explore the science behind new, more efficient thermochemical, biological and catalytic means of converting biomass and waste feedstocks into valuable products and critical materials.
The research scope in this theme will include but are not limited to:
- Feedstock analysis and engineering
- Advanced thermochemical and biological conversion processes
- Advanced biofuels and materials
- Synthetic gas
- Biomass to liquid (BtL)
- Biomethanol, Biodimether ether, Bioethanol, Biobutanol, Biohydrogen
- Algal fuels and chemicals
- Bio-oil and Biochar
- Waste derived metals, fuels and chemicals
- Energy critical materials
- Rare earth elements and products
- Sustainable alternatives materials
- Techno-economic analysis
- Life Cycle Impact
