SEACO is starting its new project ‘Verbal Autopsy’ or Cause of Death Census which is aimed to identify causes of deaths at Segamat population level. SEACO will use a tool championed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) called the verbal autopsy tool, which, by interviewing the next kin or caregivers of the deceased person, enable us to obtain details like signs, symptoms, medical history and circumstances that may have led to the death – and this allows a more accurate probability of the cause of death to be given. our site manager, Ms Nirmala Devarajan explains how the study will be carried out and the process that SEACO had employed in obtaining better understanding of cultural practices of all ethnicity – which includes Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with community’s representatives.
