What do I need to study?

General studies for all courses (except Diploma of Business).

All of the units listed below are applicable to students commencing Semester 2, 2026 intake.

The School Education Management Office in each School will help ensure that the units you undertake during your diploma/degree cover all the General Studies units requirement.

The GS units can be undertaken at any time and in any sequence before the end of the course/upon graduation.
Note: All GS units are only offered in Semester 1 and Semester 2 of the academic teaching calendar and it is not offered in the October teaching calendar.
To successfully complete one of your General Studies units, you need to make sure that you are already enrolled in them first.
How do you enrol? Well, the same as you would for any other unit!
Log into your Web Enrolment System (WES) account, and choose your General Studies unit(s) from the list of available teaching periods.

Alternatively, students may also seek further information or assistance from the School Education Management Offices in enrolling/registering for GS unit(s).
As a rule of thumb, you can only obtain an exemption from General Studies if:
1. You are a local student who has scored a minimum Credit “C” for your SPM Bahasa Melayu (only applicable for MPU2212/MPU3212 National Language A).
2. You have already completed your General Studies requirements at another institution (applicable for all General Studies units).
Eligible exemptions for MPU2212/MPU3212 National Language A will be processed upon admission to Monash University Malaysia, while exemptions for other units can be handled on a case-by-case basis by your respective School Education Management Offices. You will need to provide a copy of your transcript showing that you have completed the same unit to the School Education Management Offices.
Yes, for students commencing in Semester 1, 2025 onwards, all U1, U2, U3, and U4 units are mapped into their General Studies unit plan as outlined above.
Students who commenced their studies prior to 2025 should consult their respective School Education Management Office via Askmira to ensure that the units undertaken during their diploma or degree fulfill all General Studies unit requirements.
Unfortunately not. The Ministry of Education Malaysia does not consider Malay language assessed at IGCSE O'Level to be equivalent to SPM Bahasa Melayu.
The General Studies requirement is only applicable to undergraduate students as a pre-requisite for the award of a degree. General Studies is NOT APPLICABLE for students who enrolled in a postgraduate program.
The General Studies grades are NOT INCLUDED in the calculation of your overall GPA/WAM although it is compulsory for you to pass these units.
