TATU: An Exhibition on Tattoos and Identity

Why do people get tattoos and what meanings do they make of them? The project began with these two simple questions. In searching for the answers, TATU showcases the diverse stories of people who get tattooed and people who practice the art of tattooing.

An overarching theme that emerges from these narratives is that of self-creation. Some get tattoos to express their personalities or represent particularly important life experiences. Others use tattoos as tools to change their bodies, alter emotional states, or craft new identities. Through interviews with four tattoo artists, we also get a glimpse of the tattoo industry, what it's like to be a tattoo artist in Malaysia, and what drives them.

This exhibition was curated by Dr. Cyren Wong and Dr. Caryn Lim of the Malaysia Immersion and Pathways.
