The Research Talk Series for 2026 follows with the 7th research talk, with our esteemed speaker, Mr. Omar Yasser Abdelrazek Mohamed, PhD Candidate from the School of Engineering (SOE), presenting an insightful research talk titled "Artificial intelligence for predicting urban heat island effect and optimising land use/land cover for mitigation: Prospects and recent advancements"

This research talk discusses the rapid global urbanization that is increasing the Urban Heat Island effect, with negative implications for the urban environment. Quantifying the Surface UHI (SUHI) effect using various specifications, such as Land Surface Temperature and Local Climate Zones, and deep learning algorithms such as Convolutional Neural Networks and pix2pix, has the potential to aid sustainable city planning and the migration of greenery as a solution, thereby enabling the exploration of Local Climate Zones optimization.

Open to all Monash staff and students.
