Speak Confidently: Tips for Conversational English

Nervous about speaking in English?

It is completely normal to feel more comfortable speaking your first language with friends. However, practicing your English will help you succeed in classes, group projects, and job interviews.

Here are three simple steps to build your confidence:

  • Step 1: Start small. Pick one everyday situation to practice. Try ordering food, asking a quick question in class, or writing in a group chat in English.
  • Step 2: Get friendly support. Join our practice sessions. We welcome students at all levels. There is no judgment, and you can go at your own pace. (Book a session)
  • Step 3: Celebrate your progress. Notice the small wins. Take note when a conversation feels just a little bit easier than it did last week.

Struggling with your English vocabulary?

It can be challenging to understand new academic words in your lectures or finding the right words when chatting casually with peers.

We can help you with both!

  • Step 1: Keep a vocabulary journal: Keep a small notebook of new words you see each week and write their simple meanings.
  • Step 2: Read out loud: Practice reading a book or story aloud with our one-on-one session. (Book a session)
  • Step 3: Avoid translating word-for-word. Try to guess the meaning from the sentence before checking a dictionary.

Not sure what your classmates mean when they talk?

“Let’s grab something after this,” “that’s so random,” or a joke in a group chat. Everyday English is full of phrases that aren’t in a textbook, and it can make you feel left out even when you know the grammar.

  • Step 1: Ask what the phrase means. “What do you mean by that?” is completely normal, and most people are happy to explain.
  • Step 2: Join a group conversation. Our group sessions cover everyday talk and how people really speak on campus. (Book a session)
  • Step #3: Try one new phrase a day. Use it in a message or in class and notice how people respond.
