Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development: Immersing in Communities, Weaving Understanding

The Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development programme provides students with the opportunity to integrate theory and practice through qualitative and ethnographic research in Malaysia. Throughout the programme, students worked closely with academic staff from Australia and Malaysia, Monash University Malaysia staff, and the SEACO team in Segamat, Johor.

On 9 July 2026, the students arrived at SEACO and were warmly welcomed by the team. The programme began with an introduction to SEACO and its community-based research initiatives, followed by an introductory Bahasa Melayu class at Monash University Malaysia. Many students enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to learn the local language, confidently introducing themselves in Bahasa Melayu.

During the programme, students undertook intensive fieldwork, including Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with community members, government agencies, and partner organisations. They also visited a variety of community settings, including mosques, places of worship, farms, and local homes, gaining valuable first-hand insights into the daily lives, cultures, and experiences of the communities they engaged with.

Beyond strengthening their qualitative research and fieldwork skills, the programme fostered meaningful cross-cultural learning and built lasting connections between students and the local community. The farewell was filled with heartfelt emotions, reflecting the strong relationships that had developed throughout their time in Segamat.
