About the Grant

Top Up Travel Grant is now open for application all year round. The Top Up Travel Grant provides opportunities for staff engaged in education research to share their findings at international education conferences. This grant awards up to RM8000 as a top-up to a School travel grant and may be used to fund conference fees, travel, accommodation and other conference-related expenses.

Each application is assessed on its individual merits. Please refer to the eligibility and assessment criteria for more information.



  1. Make a copy of and complete the Top Up Travel Grant Template.
  2. Send your completed document to your Deputy Head of School (Education) or nominee for comments and endorsement. They should provide their comments in Section 4 of the template.
  3. Click the 'Apply now' button above to fill in the application. Ensure that you have the following documents in your Google Drive Link before submitting:
    1. Application Form
    2. Conference acceptance letter
    3. Conference abstract
    4. Evidence of travel funding from School
    5. Any other supporting document
  4. Please ensure that you have granted Editor/Edit access for all documents links to mum.eta@monash.edu

Applicants must fulfil the following eligibility criteria: 

  1. Applicant must be from Monash University Malaysia;
  2. Applicant must have a minimum 0.5 contract (fixed-term) within Monash University Malaysia that extends for the grant period;
  3. Applicant must be accepted to present at a leading education conference;
  4. Applicant must have an approved travel grant from their School. This is a top up only grant;
  5. Applicant must apply as an individual and not as a team;
  6. Applicant may apply for a maximum of one travel grant per calendar year;

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis by a panel of academic and professional staff. Priority will be given to applications that have received a MUM Learning and Teaching Grant.

  1. Quality of accepted conference abstract or paper
  2. Quality of conference
  3. Budget allocation is justified and in compliance with the MUM Staff Business Travel Guide

Applicant may request up to a maximum budget of MYR 8,000. Please read the MUM Staff Business Travel Guide for guidelines on budgeting.

Approved budget items include:
  1. Conference fees
  2. Air fare
  3. Accommodation
  4. Visa fees
Unapproved budget items include:
  1. Travel insurance
  2. Budget items not in compliance with the MUM Staff Business Travel Guide.
Application Requirements
  • Application must show evidence of an approved School travel grant. This is a top up only grant;
  • Applicant must ensure the conference date is at least 8 weeks from the day of application.
  • Application must be endorsed by the applicant’s Deputy Head of School (Education) or nominee.
  • Application must be submitted to Education Academy via the Asana form by the specified deadline.
  • Failure to complete the forms with accurate information or failure to meet the endorsement requirements will result in the application not being considered.
Post-travel Requirements
  • Upon return, successful travel grant recipients are required to present at a School- or campus-level education event within one year of travel.
  • Failure to perform post-travel requirements will result in disqualification from future grant schemes for a period of two years.
