Perineal Management in Childbirth — Prevention, Decision Making and Repair: An Interprofessional Workshop
Episiotomy, a surgical incision of the perineum during childbirth, has historically been performed routinely in many obstetric settings. Despite recommendations by the WHO and FIGO advocating its restrictive use, episiotomy rates continue to vary widely. A 2010 report by the Malaysian National Obstetrics Registry confirmed a national episiotomy rate of 22%, still more than double the WHO's recommended ceiling of less than 10%.
This workshop, titled Perineal Care in Childbirth: Prevention, Decision-Making, and Repair, is designed to refresh and enhance healthcare providers' knowledge and clinical approach to perineal management during childbirth. It addresses the full spectrum of perineal care — from evidence-based prevention strategies and protective techniques, to informed decision-making, accurate classification of tears, surgical repair, and post-repair management.
