Monash Diabetic Foot Management Certificate

This course, titled 'Monash Diabetic Foot Management Certificate (MDFMC) 2026', is designed to introduce participants to a structured, evidence-based and multidisciplinary approach to the assessment and management of the diabetes-related foot. Participants will gain a working command of vascular assessment, wound sampling and infection control, structured risk classification using the WIfI system, sharp debridement, pressure redistribution and offloading, and the appropriate selection of advanced and regenerative therapies — competencies that are essential for reducing preventable amputation and for building functioning diabetic foot services at institutional level.

The programme has been designed to meet an emerging need in the Malaysian and regional health system: the translation of international guideline standards, particularly those of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, into confident bedside practice by the general clinical workforce rather than by a small number of specialist centres alone.

This course is ideal for practising clinicians and allied health professionals, particularly those working in public and private hospitals, primary care clinics, diabetes centres and community wound services. Participants should have a clinical qualification and at least some exposure to patients with diabetes or chronic wounds, as the course is designed to convert existing general clinical knowledge into confident, structured, hands-on decision-making at the level of the individual foot.
- Vascular, orthopaedic and general surgeons involved in limb salvage and complex foot reconstruction
- Endocrinologists, internal medicine physicians and diabetologists managing the systemic drivers of foot disease
- General practitioners, family medicine specialists and medical officers who are the first point of contact for the at-risk foot
- Nurses, wound care nurses and assistant medical officers responsible for assessment, dressing selection and offloading
- Podiatrists, physiotherapists, dietitians, pharmacists and prosthetists and orthotists working within the diabetic foot pathway
- Clinical educators, service leads and researchers developing diabetic foot services or protocols within their institutions
By the end of this program, you will be able to:
- Explain the systemic, vascular, neuropathic and biomechanical mechanisms that drive diabetes-related foot ulceration and determine healing potential.
- Apply the WIfI classification system to grade wound, ischaemia and foot infection consistently, and interpret the resulting risk stratification to guide escalation.
- Perform a structured vascular assessment of the lower limb, including palpation, handheld Doppler, ankle- and toe-brachial index measurement and pedal acceleration time, and interpret the findings against perfusion thresholds for healing.
- Demonstrate safe technique in wound sampling, sharp nail care and callus debridement, and select an evidence-based antimicrobial and dressing strategy appropriate to the clinical presentation.
- Design and apply a pressure redistribution and offloading plan, including felt padding and removable and irremovable offloading devices, matched to ulcer site and patient adherence.
- Evaluate the indications, evidence base and limitations of advanced and regenerative therapies, and justify their selection in complex or non-healing wounds.
- Construct a staged, multidisciplinary management plan for a complex diabetes-related foot presentation and communicate the escalation and referral decisions to the wider clinical team.
