Department of Psychology

Teaching in psychology at Monash University Malaysia started in 2007 with the introduction of Bachelor of Psychological Science and Business program. In 2011, an Honours degree in Psychological Science was introduced. In 2015, the Discipline of Psychology was upgraded to the Department of Psychology, which followed the launching of two new programs: Bachelor of Psychological Science, and Master of Professional Counselling.

The Department’s primary objectives are to offer outstanding teaching and research in psychology, counselling, and other cognate disciplines. Teaching is led by cutting-edge research conducted by academic staff in the Department. A large group of PhD students make the research environment vibrant by their innovative work on memory, cognitive neuroscience, mental health, sexual behaviour, and drug addiction. The Department has three research Labs: Cognitive Neuropsychology Lab, Culture and Health Psychology Lab, and Sexuality and Interpersonal Process Lab. The academic staff regularly receive competitive external and industry grants, and all have published in internationally recognised journals and edited volumes.

The Master of Professional Counselling program has been meeting the growing demand for mental health practitioners in Malaysia and the region. This program prepares graduates who will work as registered counsellors in settings such as community mental health, schools, health centres, workplaces, and in private practice. Students complete 252 hours of counselling practicum sessions on campus, after which they undertake 504 hours of clinical placements or internship outside. The students (i.e., trainee counsellors) recruit clients from the local communities to participate in their practicum sessions.
