Located in Johor, the Monash Segamat Medical Precinct offers valuable clinical training opportunities through the Year 2 Rural Program and Year 5 Clinical Rotations. Strategically situated on Level 2 of the Easternway Building, the Precinct is supported by two dedicated professional staff and five experienced academic staff, ensuring a quality learning environment. The precinct offers medical students a unique blend of learning and community engagement.
Year 2 – Rural Program Experience
Year 2 medical students undertake a two-week rural placement in small groups at the Segamat Medical Precinct. These groups rotate fortnightly, ensuring every Year 2 student gains exposure to rural clinical settings.
During the rural program, students participate in remote learning and are virtually connected to the Main Campus for Anatomy, Problem-Based Learning (PBL), and Active Learning sessions. In addition to virtual classes, students gain practical experience through placements at Hospital Segamat, community clinics, health clinics and general practitioner clinics, where they observe real-life consultations and learn directly from doctors and specialists.
Year 5 – Clinical Posting
Final-year medical students have the opportunity to complete their clinical rotations across a range of departments, including:
- Internal Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Forensic Medicine
- Surgery
- Orthopaedics
- Anaesthesiology (specialty rotation)
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology (specialty rotation)
- Paediatrics (speciality rotation)
Students typically complete 2 to 3 clinical postings, with each posting lasting approximately 1.5 months. These immersive rotations provide comprehensive exposure to patient care in a rural hospital setting, equipping students with essential clinical skills and preparing them for future medical practice.
