About us - Why now (1200x900)

Where you're born, work and live shapes how long and how well you live. It shouldn't.

Across Malaysia, the region and the world, too many people are kept from good health. This is not by personal failing, but by how power, money and opportunity are shared. These gaps are costly: they cut lives and livelihoods short, fall hardest on those with the least power, who carry the greatest burden and often remain uncounted. They also pile pressure on health systems left to treat problems that could have been prevented.

The good news is that health gaps are made by the choices of societies: and what is made can be changed. Medical and health services play a role. But most of what determines our health lies outside the clinic, in the everyday environments in which people live. And those environments are changing fast: ageing populations, growing cities and new technologies like AI are redrawing what keeps people well. Improving health demands action right across government and society, not by the health sector alone. That’s our purpose: producing trusted evidence, and using it with communities, governments and partners to build fairer, healthier societies.

About us - Vision and Mission 2

Vision and Mission

Our Vision

Everyone in environments that keep them well. Everyone with a say in the decisions that shape their health. Everyone reaching their full health potential.

Our Mission

We produce independent, practical evidence on the forces that shape people's health, co-created with communities, researchers and partners across the region and beyond. We put that evidence to work, with governments, civil society and movements, to hold decision-makers to account and drive changes in policy and practice that close health gaps. And we teach and support the next generation of health leaders to think differently, work across sectors, and build the systems and solutions that keep people well.

About our research team

We're a small team, working at every career stage, whose training runs across medicine, global population health and epidemiology as well as economics, sociology, law, policy and the politics of health. But the range itself isn't the point. What matters is what happens when we combine our approaches. Health problems rarely sit inside a single discipline or sector, so we don't try to understand them from just one.

By bringing our different perspectives together, and working closely with communities, policymakers and partners, we see problems more fully and design solutions that hold up in the real world. Working across disciplines and sectors is what lets us get beneath the surface of a problem to its causes, and act on them. And we draw on experience from well beyond academia: in medical and legal clinics, in UN and international agencies, in all countries across income levels and expertise gained by advising governments and running civil society organisations.
