Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development (ATS3248 & APG4248): Immersive Fieldwork Experience

Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development (ATS3248 & APG4248) provides students with a unique opportunity to engage in fieldwork and data collection, focusing on the multifaceted aspects of the Malaysian context. This comprehensive course aims to explore the historical, social, cultural, economic, and public health dimensions specific to Malaysia. Moreover, it emphasizes the application of ethical principles in community-based research, addressing challenges that arise within the research settings or platform, notably SEACO.

Throughout the fieldwork, students actively participate in conducting focus group discussions (FGDs) with diverse stakeholders, including the local community, government agencies, and private organizations. They also visit various locations relevant to their research topics, such as mosques, flood-prone areas, plantation farms, traditional medicine practitioners, and community houses.

Additionally, some students had the opportunity to visit breathtaking sites in Segamat, including the magnificent Takah Pengkoi waterfall in the Orang Asli community at the Bekok sub-district, along with other captivating attractions in the area.

As the fieldwork concludes, bidding farewell becomes challenging due to the warmth and kindness exhibited by the community in Segamat. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in making this program a resounding success, cherishing the memories we have created together.
