Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development (ATS3248 & APG4248): Enhancing Research Skills

Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development ATS3248 offers students a unique opportunity to acquire both theoretical and practical training in qualitative and ethnographic field research methods. As part of this unit, students will embark on a 19-day immersive experience in Malaysia, specifically at Monash Malaysia. During their stay, they will collaborate with the Australian-based unit coordinator, local staff members from the School of Arts and Social Sciences (Monash Malaysia), and the South East Asian Community Observatory (SEACO).

The primary objective of the field trip is to enable students to undertake small-scale research projects, allowing them to collect data in the field and subsequently analyse, present, and document their findings. This practical application of field research methods will equip students with valuable skills for their future endeavours in anthropology and international development.

The journey commenced on July 3, 2023, with an orientation session that included briefings and introductory presentations by the academic staff. To ensure thorough preparation, students also engaged in a comprehensive three-day course on Ethnographic Research Methods. During this course, facilitators facilitated group discussions and collaborative planning sessions, laying the groundwork for the upcoming fieldwork.

On July 7, 2023, the students arrived safely at SEACO, Segamat, where they were warmly greeted and provided with an introduction to SEACO's ongoing research projects and basic Malay Language class. Notably, the students took the initiative to learn the Malay language and actively introduced themselves in Malay. This endeavour added an element of enjoyment and cultural immersion to their learning experience, fostering a positive start to their journey. With this enthusiasm, the students are poised for success throughout the course.
