South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia - Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development (ATS3248 & APG4248): Fieldwork Experience

The course "Field Methods in Anthropology and International Development (ATS3248 & APG4248)" offers students a unique opportunity to engage in fieldwork and data collection, focusing on various contextual aspects in Malaysia. This comprehensive course aims to explore the historical, social, cultural, economic, and public health dimensions specific to Malaysia. Additionally, it emphasizes the application of ethical principles in community-based research, addressing challenges encountered in research settings or platforms.

During the fieldwork from June 29 to July 2, 2024, students actively participated in conducting focus group discussions (FGDs) with various stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and private organizations. They also visited various locations related to their research topics, such as mosques, places of worship, agricultural and livestock farms, traditional medical practitioners, and community houses.

After the fieldwork concluded, saying goodbye became difficult due to the warmth and kindness displayed by the people of Segamat. We extend our highest appreciation to all those involved and who collaborated in making this program a success. The memories created together will surely remain cherished.
