South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia – Research, Experimentation and Discovery (RED) Program Visit

On 20-21 November 2024, the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO) was thrilled to host a group of enthusiastic students from Monash University, who visited as part of the Research, Experimentation and Discovery (RED) program. This visit was a remarkable opportunity to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and explore new horizons in research and community engagement.

Throughout the visit, SEACO organized a series of insightful sessions designed to enrich the students' understanding of community health and local traditions. The students were first guided through the Segamat District Health Office and Health Clinic, where they participated in group discussions to deepen their knowledge of public health initiatives in the region. They also invited the Penghulu’s office for an enlightening exchange on local governance and its impact on health practices.

The highlight of the visit was a journey to the Bekok Mukim, where the group had the chance to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of the Orang Asli community. The day began with a fascinating information session on traditional medicine, held at the Orang Asli Traditional Hall in Kampung Tamok, Bekok. Students were introduced to the unique healing practices and cultural significance of traditional medicine in the community. This hands-on learning experience was not only educational but also an eye-opening glimpse into the traditions that have been passed down for generations.

To end the visit on a high note, the group enjoyed a delightful meal at the Achi Gold Cafe @ Claire Junction in Bekok, where they could reflect on the knowledge and experiences gained throughout the day.

This visit aimed to provide students with a deeper understanding of the traditional medicine and culture practiced by the Orang Asli community, offering them a unique and enriching experience that connected them with the cultural heritage of Malaysia. It was an unforgettable opportunity for the students to gain a new perspective on the intersection of health, culture, and community.

SEACO would like to express its heartfelt gratitude to all the students and teaching staff for their enthusiasm and dedication throughout the visit. We hope this experience has provided valuable insights and inspiration, leaving a lasting positive impact on everyone involved. We are excited about the potential for this positive collaboration to continue growing in the future, fostering deeper connections and expanding knowledge between our institutions.
