Published: 24 August 2026
Monash University Malaysia was delighted to welcome the distinguished Prof. Matthias Egger, a leading epidemiologist from the University of Bern, on September 23, 2025, for an insightful hybrid talk on the culture of academic publishing.

In a compelling presentation titled "The end of publish or perish? Towards best practices in publishing and research assessment," Prof. Egger offered his expert perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the modern researcher. He explored innovative approaches to research assessment that prioritize quality and impact over quantity.
The event successfully blended in-person and virtual participation. Monash University staff attended the session on campus, while a wider external audience of researchers and academics joined via a live digital stream. This hybrid model facilitated a broad and engaging discussion, with Prof. Egger fielding questions from both audiences, leading to a vibrant exchange of ideas.
The talk was part of a wider university initiative to foster international academic collaboration and enhance regional research capacity. The enthusiasm and follow-up interest in collaborative projects following the session are a testament to the event's success. We extend our sincere thanks to Prof. Egger for his time and thought-provoking contributions.
