Adolescent Health Talk & Workshop 2017
JCSMHS, Clinical School of Johor Bahru in collaboration with the Malaysia Medical Association (MMA) Johor Branch and Johor Mental Health Association, organised an Adolescent Health Talk on “Dying to be thin” by Datin Dr Sheila Marimuthu on 10 March 2017 looking into recognising eating disorders. This was followed by the Adolescent Health Workshop on 11 March 2017.
The talk and workshop were targeted at medical students, doctors, specialists, health care professionals and counselors. The audience involved Monash and Newcastle University medical students, psychology students from Raffles University, Government doctors, allied health professionals and non-governmental agencies.
The objective of the workshop was to create awareness on Adolescent Medicine. The workshop included talks on understanding and dealing with adolescent issues, HEADSS screening and the psychological issues involved in adolescent. This was followed by case scenarios and role playing.
The expert speakers were Dr Kasturi Nair, (Chairman Adolescent Sub Committee MMA), Datin Dr Sheila Marimuthu (Paediatrician & Adolescent Consultant, Hospital Kuala Lumpur), Dr Hargeet Kaur Dhillon (Paediatrician & Adolescent Consultant, Hospital Selayang) Dr Trishant Kaur Sandhu (Medical Officer Tanglin Clinic, Kuala Lumpur) and Dr Sivakumar Thurairajasingam (Consultant Psychiatrist, Monash University Malaysia).
The response from the audience was overwhelming with a good positive feedback on the event.
