Completion of the Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) 2016 program
The Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours), BMedSc(Hons) program was introduced by the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2012 as an accredited honours degree by research. The program is designed to enable students to gain an in-depth understanding and to experience the essence of research.
The 2016 program that concluded recently recorded a full intake of nine students, which had been the highest by far. The increase in awareness on BMedSc(Hons) and the introduction of the summer semester contributed to this encouraging number. The summer semester allows students to commence the program in November and complete it by end of June. This timing dovetails with our MBBS graduates’ completion of their MBBS course and the commencement of their internship. Gaining research skills and earning a degree that enables a pathway to advanced postgraduate research studies in later years will be strategic steps before joining the medical profession.
The 2016 program also saw involvement of all the three sites of the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences; namely the Sunway campus (3 projects), Clinical School Johor Bahru (5 projects) and Segamat (1 project). Apart from learning through the actual conduct of research, the nine students also had formal sessions arranged by the School such as workshops on database search, End Note and applied statistics.
One of the strengths of the program is the close supervision and mentoring of the students by their supervisors. These supervisors provide guidance on the various steps of research including the literature review, methodology and results analysis. Support and monitoring of the research progress is also provided by the BMedSc Academic Coordinators; Dr. Kyi Kyi Tha and Associate Professor Dr Nor’azim Mohd Yunos and the management team led by Ms Thavamaney Vadiveloo.
We congratulate all the students for their completion of the BMedSc(Hons) program. Their diligence and dedication has placed them one step ahead in the research domain.. We would also like to extend our congratulations to all the supervisors for their effort and contributions in guiding the students. All in all, 2016 has been a good year for the BMedSc(Hons) program and we are now working hard towards a better 2017.
