Gerontechnology Lab

Gerontechnology is an interdisciplinary field of research that focuses on how technology can support the needs and desires of older adults. At Monash Business, the Gerontechnology Lab aims to translate research into practical solutions and bolster public policies surrounding the health and well-being of older adults.

Our specialist services include:

Research and Development: We conduct translational research that infuses the human element in order to support people living and ageing well in the last third of their adult lives.
Education and Training: Our team provides education, training, assessment and consultation services in gerontechnology, home safety and the independent living environment.
Research Network: We are an expanding networkiwell-beingng platform for multidisciplinary research collaborations in Monash and beyond.
Engagement and Impact: We develop innovative solutions and forward-looking policies to advance community impact, social engagement and the wellbeing of ageing communities.
Open Platform: We are an open platform for the general public to trial, learn and explore the various technologies available.

With state-of-the-art facilities, the Lab also serves as a centre for education, training, assessments and consultation on gerontechnology, home safety and the independent living environment.

Our vision is to be a leading multidisciplinary research platform for gerontechnology with strong local relevance to the Asian and Australasian contexts. We aspire to build a strong network in Asia, raising much-needed awareness and improving public policies for the well-being of older adults.

The Gerontechnology Lab revolves its research around the impact of assistive technologies across five domains of human activities: health and self-esteem, housing and daily living, mobility and transport, communication and governance, as well as work and leisure.
As an inter- and multidisciplinary lab, we engage students, researchers and alumni from Monash and partners in academia, business and government both in Malaysia and around the world. Our pool of research capabilities cover diverse fields including:

Armed with an ever-growing understanding of the challenges and opportunities of longevity, we raise awareness and provide comprehensive, relevant insights into ageing to support product developers, service providers and policy makers. Through our research and consulting, we strive to improve the quality of life for older adults and empower them to live independently and actively.
The Gerontechnology Lab at Monash University is part of the International Collaboratory for Gerontechnology (ICG), a network of research centres and organisations focusing on technologies that assist people of all abilities to stay in their own homes (ageing-in-place) by turning homes into limited virtual caregivers.
Our researchers also work closely with academia in relevant fields, industry, government, non-profits and regulatory bodies as part of our commitment to interdisciplinary, collaborative research that improves the lives of older adults.

The Lab’s facilities are thoughtfully equipped for research, experiments and training. There are four stations available:

- The Smartphone Home System enables users to operate household electronic devices from their smartphone.
- Gerontological furniture and design are accompanied by info cards explaining their function.
- A wide range of gerontechnological utensils and apparatus related to food preparation is available for use.
- This station is suitable for a variety of social science and psychology experiments as well as research projects.
Various mobility and health monitoring devices are available for use in research surrounding healthcare and ageing. These include a home care bed, recliner and stand-up sofa, reclining and tilting wheelchair, multi-function Quad cane and non-invasive sensor monitoring system among others.
- The Age Simulation Suit mimics the effects of ageing, providing experiential learning for young adults.
- The human exoskeleton, a wearable mobile machine powered by a system of electric motors, enables body movement with increased strength and endurance.
- The Visible Light Positioning system, which uses LED lights to pinpoint the location of objects, enables users to identify and detect items around them. Results are sent to the designated smartphone via the Internet of Things (IoT) platform.
