Complementary study is for final semester students who wish to enrol in units offered at another tertiary institution to achieve your course credit requirements of your current Monash course.
Students may apply for Complementary Study by filling in the Complementary Study Form.
In assessing an application for complementary study, the school will consider equivalence of content and learning outcomes, and whether there is significant educational advantage for the proposed program of study.
You must attach the following documents for unit assessment:

Complementary study is normally only approved where the units selected are not offered by Monash University within a reasonable timeframe. You must get approval from your school before enrolling in any units. If approved, the complementary units will be included on your official Monash transcript.
Closing date:
The deadlines to apply for complemnetary study are as follows:
You'll pay your unit fee to the host institution. This applies to both Commonwealth supported place (CSP) and full-fee places. The host institution may charge other fees, such as the Student Services and Amenities Fee.
If you hold a CSP pre-2021 with Monash, and are granted a CSP at the host institution, you'll need to apply to the host institution to record your enrolment at the pre-2021 rate.
You must:
- request an academic record of your results from the host institution
- provide the result to School of Business Education Management Office by emailing your result to inquiries.malaysia@monash.edu within six weeks of results released.
Your result (Final Grade) will appear on your academic record (transcript) as either SFR (Satisfied Faculty Requirements) for passed units or N (Fail).
Failure to provide a record from the host institution will result in a 'Fail' being recorded against the units on your Monash academic record (transcript).
When a student from another institution takes a unit of study at Monash University, it's called cross-institutional study. In the event that students from a different institution under a different qualification were not able to complete their studies overseas, they are able to finish up their units in MUM. If they are elective units, the units are highly likely to be transferable. If the student has to enrol in units that contribute to their major/specialization, they would need to check with their managing faculty overseas to see if the unit they intend to do in MUM is equivalent to the unit that is required for the course. For more information, student may refer to this webpage.
If you are a student at another tertiary institution in Australia or New Zealand, you can apply to study at Monash and get credit towards your course at your home institution. Unit outlines are available from the Monash Handbook.
Cross-institutional study is a competitive process due to a limited number of places, which are made available by the faculty teaching the unit.
To apply:
1.Complete a cross-institutional study application (pdf, 0.23 mb) (non-Monash students).
2. Provide a copy of your academic record from your home institution and evidence of your citizenship status.
3. See the application form for further details, including where to lodge the form.
Closing dates for applications
Semester one: 30 January
Semester two: 19 June
Some faculties accept cross-institutional study applications for their summer and winter units. Closing dates for these units differ. See summer and winter units.

You will be charged either a full-fee or Commonwealth supported place (CSP), based on selection criteria and the availability of places.
If we offer you a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), you need to complete the Request for Commonwealth Support and HECS-HELP form in the Web Enrolment System (WES).
Monash will charge the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) based on your enrolment mode and study load. See SSAF fee amount. You cannot get an SA-HELP loan to defer payments for cross-institutional study. Monash will not charge the SSAF if you have been charged by your home institution for the cross-institutional study. You will need to provide proof of upfront payment or incurred SA-HELP.
