Our department offers strong expertise in contract law, company law, cyber law, corporate governance, taxation law, and many other areas of commercial law. Instead of concentrating solely on the specific application of laws within a particular jurisdiction, our emphasis is on the general principles of law that apply across various common law jurisdictions. You will be encouraged to delve into comparative aspects of law when relevant. This approach will equip you with a more comprehensive understanding of the laws and regulations that form the foundation of business transactions, both at a local and international level. Additionally, it will open up a wider range of career opportunities for you in the future. Our lessons are relevant, engaging and authentic to real-world experiences. Our Research
As researchers in the discipline of law, our ultimate goal is to create a positive impact in business and society. We have published research across our focus areas of commercial law, company law and comparative law. In a nod to the relevance and impact of our research, several of the department’s publications have been cited by judges in their court judgments.
In all of our research endeavours, our objective is not merely to conduct research for its own sake, but rather, we make dedicated efforts to effectively communicate the findings for practical application. We have a history of accomplishing this by co-organising symposiums with esteemed institutions such as the Malaysian Bar Council and we remain committed to this approach. These symposiums provide a platform for academics, the judiciary and law practitioners to discuss research findings and distil possible solutions to legal challenges within the scope of business.
Our Engagement
The Department of Business Law and Taxation enjoys strong partnerships with government agencies, the judiciary, industry partners, local universities, NGOs and the Malaysian Bar Council. We also organise the Annual Budget Seminar in collaboration with leading taxation experts in Malaysia.
As public intellectuals, we believe law academics have the responsibility to actively engage in discussions pertaining to law reform. Our adjunct professors include a member of the judiciary as well as an established senior lawyer, and our lecturers are passionate about advancing good practices beyond the classroom.
