Econometrics and Business Statistics

About Us

At the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics (EBS), data is power. We integrate economic theory, business paradigm, statistical science and data science in our curriculum to solve real-life problems in a multidisciplinary context.

As data grows in both size and form, we hone our students in a wide range of quantitative skills, fluency in data analytics and algorithmic problem-solving skills needed in today’s workplaces.

Our department offers two majors in the Bachelor of Business and Commerce program, allowing students to choose the most suitable path in line with their professional aspirations and personal interests:

  • Econometrics and Business Statistics
  • Business Analytics

We also provide data analytics training and consultancy services to industry and public sector partners, maintaining strong external partnerships to ensure our study programs stay relevant to the ever-changing needs in the field. We invite you to pursue a major with us and discover how to employ the power of data for the betterment of business, economy, and society.

Professor Erniel Barrios
Head of Econometrics & Business Statistics

Every day, data affects our lives. In the choices we make, the problems we face and solutions we discover, data impacts us. It’s an exciting field to be a part of even as we stand on the constant edge of advancing technology and human behaviour.

Our faculty are well-established in their fields of expertise, bringing both knowledge and experience to the classroom and beyond. With an emphasis on theory, algorithms and computing skills partnered with real-world practice, you will learn how to extract insights from data for domain-specific contexts.

“The best thing about a statistician is that you get to play in everyone’s backyard.” These wise words by American statistician and mathematician, John Tukey, aptly describe the versatility of knowing how to use data efficiently and effectively in real life.

I invite you to explore the world of econometrics, business statistics and business analytics with us.

Why Study with Us?

  • Confidently learn using relevant and up-to-date curricula to solve real-world problems and workplace needs (due to constant engagement with industry partners, alumni and experts)
  • Establish your strengths in theory, methods/algorithms and computing skills paired with real-life practice, equipping you to apply data insights in proper domain-specific contexts
  • Increase your employability in a high-demand field with a degree from a world-renowned business school

Our Research

In terms of education and research, we focus on core theory and methods to extract insights from data for optimal decisions and transformative actions. With foundations in econometric theory, statistical science and computational methods, the department works in collaboration with colleagues from other disciplines to elevate policy development and strategic decision-making in digital businesses and the public sector

Our specific research strengths include (but are not limited to): predictive analytics, analysis of time series data, computational econometrics, modelling survey data, machine learning and big data analytics.

Our Engagement

As a department, we are committed to forging and strengthening partnerships with industry experts, alumni and the public sector to further advance this field of study.

We provide data analytics (including statistical and econometric modelling training and consultancy services to external partners and the public sector, realising that with the right knowledge and tools, data can be effectively used in business strategy, policy and decision-making.

Any industry generating any amount of data (sparse to massive) are potential collaborators of the EBS researchers. If you would like to explore a collaboration in a specific field of study, please get in touch with the respective academic faculty below.
