Dr. Soo Yeong Ewe recently organised a study trip as part of the experiential approach to teaching the unit Marketing and International Consumers (MKM 5955). This trip provided students with an opportunity to engage in a learning activity focused on environmental protection and sustainability outside of the classroom. Alongside Dr. Ewe, Dr. Helen Ho also joined to lead students enrolled in the unit to the Tzu Chi recycling centre located in Taman Kinrara, Puchong, Selangor. This activity directly aligns with the unit's objective, which emphasises sustainability principles.

MKM 5955_1 During the visit to the recycling centre, students had an enriching experience. They attended a talk addressing climate change and the 5R concept, which was followed by participation in recycling activities and visits to various environmental exhibition booths.

The students found the activities engaging, and some shared their reflections during the concluding session of the study trip:

“Protecting the environment starts with me”

“I have a sense of environmental protection, but I rarely preach it to others, but from this study tour, I feel that promoting environmental awareness is a very meaningful thing, and I can also influence others. As long as everyone changes, we can make the environment better!”

“It is an essential social responsibility for every resident, society and government to working together by following the SDG goals to promote a practical solution.”

MKM 5955_2Overall, this two-hour event left a lasting impact on many students, fostering a strong desire to actively participate in environmental protection efforts rather than contribute to further environmental degradation. As aspiring marketers, the students gained valuable insights from the trip, prompting them to consider how marketers can play a proactive role in promoting environmental sustainability. They are now contemplating strategic campaigns and initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable practices and consumer behaviour in their future endeavours.
