Islamic Fintech: Driving Financial Inclusion and Sustainability in Malaysia

2 July 2024

At the DisruptInvest Summit 2024, Professor Nafis Alam delivered an insightful speech on the evolving landscape of Islamic finance in Malaysia, emphasising its potential to drive financial inclusion and sustainability.

The DisruptInvest Summit is Malaysia's premier event for startup and corporate innovation, aiming to energise the startup ecosystem by facilitating connections and collaborations among angel investors, venture capital firms, family offices, large corporates, and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Professor Alam highlighted that Islamic fintech, while rooted in Shariah principles, is not exclusive to Muslims and offers benefits that can appeal to a broader audience. He stressed that Islamic fintech's core principles, such as the prohibition of interest (riba) and uncertainty (gharar), promote ethical and equitable financial practices. These principles are aligned with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks, making Islamic finance inherently more sustainable and capable of addressing several United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A significant part of Professor Alam’s argument centred around the inclusivity of Islamic finance. He pointed out that it provides a level playing field, particularly for underserved communities, by fostering financial literacy and extending access to financial services that traditional banking systems often overlook. This inclusivity can drive broader economic growth and reduce poverty, aligning with SDG targets.

Professor Alam highlighted Malaysia's strategic edge in Islamic fintech, pointing to its strong regulatory framework and supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem. He stressed the importance of agile policies to foster continuous innovation while accommodating rapid technological advancements and avoiding hindrances to growth.

In conclusion, his address at the DisruptInvest Summit 2024 painted a promising picture of Islamic finance's future in Malaysia, calling for increased education and awareness to fully harness its potential and advocating for a collaborative effort to foster a financially inclusive and sustainable economic environment.
