UN SDG Academy sponsored Special Issue on SDG 4 Quality Education in the International Journal of Educational Development

Ensuring access to quality education for all is imperative for personal and societal development, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability.

In a collaboration with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and SDG Academy, Professor M Niaz Asadullah from the School of Business at Monash University Malaysia co-edited a Special Issue titled “Critical Perspectives at the Midpoint of SDG 4” in the International Journal of Educational Development, alongside Dr. D. Brent Edwards Jr from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and Dr. Amber Webb from the UN SDSN.

Prof. Niaz, also an associate editor of the partner publication, co-authored an article in the special issue titled “SDG 4 Mid-Point Challenge: Fixing the Broken Interlinkages between Education and Gender Equality.” This special issue, comprising 27 insightful articles, represents a significant global collaboration effort with contributions from over three dozen leading international scholars in the field of education.

Centred on SDG 4: Quality Education as part of the UN's 2030 Agenda, this special issue examines critiques, best practices, and evaluation topics related to SDG 4, aiming to inform the UN SDG Summit and subsequent events. The key objectives include highlighting scholarly dialogue, deepening discourse on measurement, providing case studies, and enriching global policy discourse. Overall, this special issue offers a comprehensive view of the progress achieved in the first half of the 2030 Agenda, as well as remaining challenges, including criticism of the overall SDG 4 measurement and governance framework.
