BMedSci/MD Student Wins Year 2 Faculty Prize Award

July 2020

Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences’ (JCSMHS) Year 3 Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedSci/MD) student, Wong Ruo Wen, was one of the two Monash University students who was awarded the Year 2 Faculty Prize.

The Faculty Prize is an award based on academic performance among students in the Malaysian and Clayton campus. It is one of the awards among others that are given to Monash Medical students from years 1 to 5 and it is to commemorate the student’s achievement in a particular unit or in Ruo Wen’s case, her academic performance throughout last year.

Unfortunately due to Covid-19, a Student Awards Ceremony could not be held but she was nonetheless pleasantly surprised when she got the email informing that she had won the award, and then received the certificate by mail shortly after. When asked about what she did to get the award, she said “I believe I had studied hard in order to achieve a good academic score in year 2. Efforts in self-directed learning undoubtedly paid off. Notably, active learning sessions which were introduced as a new learning style in the Monash Medicine program had helped me improve my clinical reasoning skills. Time management was essential as well, especially when it came to the heavy workload in medical school. Time was also frequently spent on practising for Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) sessions. Additionally, the lecturers were always supportive and there to clarify any doubts when needed.”

“I am incredibly honoured and grateful to have my efforts recognized by Monash University. It has also given me the motivation to diligently strive to perform better in the coming 3 years of medical school. I would also like to take the chance to express my gratitude to lecturers and friends who have been supportive and made my journey in medical school a fruitful one. I have yet to decide on which medical field to pursue in the future but I have a keen interest in internal medicine and neurology. The Monash Medicine program has also opened my eyes to other fields such as research and public health which are equally important as seen in the recent global pandemic. This award will serve as a reminder to stay humble and keep learning diligently. Ancora Imparo.”
