Depending on your eligibility, AMU3744 Workplace Learning Internship can be used as a free elective or count towards an area of study (e.g.: Communication, Global Studies, Gender Studies and Film, TV & Screen Studies) or towards the general studies U4 requirement.
The voluntary internship placement offered in Arts is a non-credit internship that does not require graded assessments and does not contribute credit points towards your degree.
To apply for a voluntary internship placement, students must be enrolled into a course in the SASS in Monash University Malaysia and have completed at least 1 year of their course (equivalent to two semesters).
Note: Voluntary Internship Placement is only applicable to domestic students.
No, it is not possible to apply for credit for the voluntary internship work placement as it is a non-credit bearing unit.
You are encouraged to begin early by preparing your application documents (e.g., resume, cover letter, course progression map) and researching organisations where you wish to pursue an internship. It is recommended to start this process at least two to three months in advance.
Students are required to complete an internship during the Summer A teaching period for a duration of 2 to 3 months, with at least 144 hours, between early November to mid-February. Internships outside this approved timeframe will not be accepted and will result in an unsuccessful outcome.
Please refer to the Monash Handbook for more information on the assessment details or contact the Internship Coordinator (Undergraduate), Mr Rubin Khoo (Email: Rubin.Khoo@monash.edu) for more information.
Students commonly intern at news agencies, PR and advertising firms, as well as in industries such as aviation, banking, insurance, and HR departments/companies. Internships can be completed in Malaysia or abroad, either as a home or international student.
If you are unsure where to start, you may refer to the Career Resources available in this LINK as a starting point.
All internship placements offered by SASS are student‑sourced, which means you are responsible for finding your own placement. The placement should be meaningful and relevant to your studies, allowing you to apply and demonstrate what you have learned during your course within the host organisation.
If you have specific interests or preferences, you are encouraged to use your network of contacts to find a self-placement. You can approach the host organisation and arrange to complete a placement, provided it meets the required internship criteria.
Placements need to be meaningful and relevant to your studies where you are able to demonstrate what you have learned from your course during your placement in the host organisation.
To gain the utmost experience during your internship, the School would like to request all students to secure a 100% face to face internship placement.
However, if the company requires you to have a mixture in the mode of the internship (e.g.: hybrid), please indicate this requirement in the application form in Step 4 to seek an approval from the unit coordinator before accepting the offer.
Not necessarily as the internship offers the students an opportunity to explore different career pathways before deciding on your first job.
In most cases, host organisations may provide a monthly allowance or help cover transport expenses. However, opportunities to negotiate a salary are very limited. Host organisations are not required to pay students undertaking an internship, whether it is a voluntary placement or as a credit‑bearing unit.
Please refer to the AMU3744 application process for more information on the link resources that might be helpful during your application process.
Application details are available at the AMU3744 application process. Please follow the instructions provided.
The internship letter is a general letter issued by SASS to support students in their internship application with potential employers. The purpose is to confirm your status as an enrolled student in Monash University Malaysia (MUM) and the intention to undertake the AMU3744 Workplace Learning Internship.
Note: You are required to provide this letter to the host organisation when you apply for an internship position.
You may submit your request for an internship letter through InPlace. For step‑by‑step guidance, please refer to the instructions card in the AMU3744 application process on how to locate the recommendation letter.
You may access InPlace through the Monash Student Portal.
