SASS Gender Studies Special Event by Dr Susan Carland

We are delighted to have Dr Susan Carland, Deputy Director of Research, Impact, and Engagement for the School of Social Sciences at Monash University, joining us today to discuss 'Gender Inclusion and Islam: Muslim Women in Australia Negotiating Access.'
Dr Carland stresses the challenges that Muslim women face from both within and outside the Muslim community when speaking out about issues of gender discrimination and sexism. She discusses the "double bind" that Muslim women have to navigate, facing criticism and control from both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences. Dr Carland also emphasises the importance of Muslim women being able to share their stories of gender justice on their own terms, despite facing contemptuous attitudes.
We extend our gratitude to Dr Carland for sharing her valuable insights with us.
