Industrial training

In order to fulfill the requirements of the degree regulations, and the expectations of Engineers Australia and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, all engineering students must complete twelve weeks of approved engineering work experience and submit a written report detailing the experience. The industrial training must be completed before the degree can be conferred and it is undertaken during the summer vacation (mid-November to February), after completing three years (5 semesters, 120 credit points) of studies and before complete academic studies.

The duration of the industrial training is 12 weeks of continuous training. Students are NOT allowed to do partially as previous years.

The Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) also requires that students undergo the industrial training BEFORE they complete their academic studies. Students must complete 12 weeks of industrial training to be eligible to graduate. Students at the Malaysia campus must undertake their industrial training in an industry-based environment. As such, Malaysia campus students undertaking research work in the university environment cannot be considered as having met the requirements of the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council. This also applies to Malaysia campus students undertaking their inter-campus exchange at Clayton campus.

Students must ensure that their internship meets the requirements below.
- Internship role must be aligned to your study (mechanical, robotics and mechatronics, software, etc.) Engineering
- Internship duration of at least 12 continuous weeks
- Internship must be supervised or mentored (Engineers or professionals from the same field)
- You can intern in any company (not necessarily in the list provided by us), within Malaysia or overseas, as long as the tasks are relevant to your field of study.
- You must have at least 120 credit points before your internship. For example, if you plan to have your internship in the Summer Semester, you must have achieved 96 credit points by the end of Semester 1 and be acquiring 24 credit points in the Semester 2. You can still proceed with your internship if you missed by at most 1 unit (must apply for special consideration)
- Prerequisites: Students must have completed a minimum of 120 credit points in engineering study.

What is the duration of industrial training? Can we break this?	Duration: 12 weeks. This needs to be undertaken continuously. This cannot be broken down into two or more parts.
If I take personal leave during industrial training, do I need to replace the time off?	Yes.
If I take medical leave during industrial training, do I need to replace them?	No, but medical leave must be certified by the company’s doctor and approved by the company’s HR department. Attach the MC to your final report with the HR approval.
Do I need to make a replacement for my internship when my company shuts down?	If the shutdown days are public holidays, no replacement is required. Otherwise, you need to replace them.
My industrial training contract is longer than 12 weeks. Can I end it?	Yes, if : 1) You have completed 12 weeks and replaced any personal leaves 2) The company agrees to end your contract early
I started late. My industrial training extends into the next semester. Can I skip classes?	You may miss classes only for the first week of the semester, provided you are able to manage week-1 activities on your own.
How is the duration of 12 weeks counted?	Internship duration is counted in work weeks. Students must intern continuously for 12 weeks (excluding public holidays). Students need to replace both company and personal leave. A 13-week internship is recommended to allow for emergencies.
What is the minimum internship duration?	At least 12 continuous weeks (60 working days if a 5-day week). If the company has 5.5 or 6 working days, the total days must match 12 weeks of their schedule.

Is there any template for the logs?	Yes. Please use the template provided on Moodle.
How should I maintain the log books?	You must maintain a weekly log for each internship week. If your internship is 13 weeks long, you must complete 13 log sheets.
Who should sign the log books?	Your internship supervisor (company). Logs should be signed weekly.
If my internship starts mid-week (e.g., Wednesday), how should I write the logs?	Wed–Fri (Week 1), then Mon–Fri for subsequent weeks.

How do I enroll in the unit?	Enroll via WES according to WES access dates. For summer enrollment, the application period opens from August 1 to October 31, 202x. You must enroll for ENG0002 SB 202x/202(x+1) on your own.

Can I discontinue from the unit?	Under special circumstances, yes. Check with the Course Management Office.
Can I not undertake ENG0002?	No. ENG0002 is mandatory for all Engineering students.
Can I undertake other units concurrently?	No. ENG0002 must be done full-time, ideally during the Nov- Feb vacation.
How much is the fee?	This is a 0-credit unit. No fees.

How do I enroll for a lecturer's visit?	Enroll via the Moodle page using the form - ENG0002 Industrial Training – Lecturers Visit Enrollment Form 202x. For summer enrollment, the application period ends December 15, 202x.

Is there a word limit for the Final Report?	Yes, approximately 3,000 words (not a strict limit).
Final Report Assessment Task Submission	You are given four weeks after completion to submit the final report. If ENG0002 is your last unit before graduation, you must submit early. Ensure all required documents are included.
If I want to attach code or photos, can I add them to the report?	Codes and presentations can be attached as appendices. Photos may be included in the main report if relevant and appropriate. Submit these only after permission and after redacting confidential information.

Will the school provide placements?	No. Students must find and apply for internships themselves. The school may broadcast vacancies based on the requests from Industries.

Can I have a fully remote internship?	No. Internships must be physical. Hybrid is allowed.
Can I decline an offer after I have accepted and signed?	Not advisable. Students are responsible for the consequences of not honouring the contract.
