Engineering Postgraduate Wins IEEE I&M Graduate Fellowship Award 2017
During the 24th of May, 2017 award ceremony at the IEEE International Instrumentation & Measurement (I&M) Technology Conference in Turin, Italy, it was announced that Mr. Arvind Rajan, Monash University Malaysia PhD student supervised by two School of Engineering academics (Associate Professor Y. C. Kuang and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow, Associate Professor M. P.-L. Ooi) became a winner of the IEEE 2017 I&M Society Graduate Fellowship Award.
Arvind has become the very first junior researcher in South East Asia to receive this prestigious award. His work on “Analytic Moment-based Measurement Uncertainty Evaluation for Reliability Analysis of Complex Engineering Systems” has offered a fast and accurate reliability analysis that is extremely important in various fields of modern engineering.
His work has already influenced research and development in several countries in areas such as the design of safe electric vehicles, optimization of magnetic sensors, energy savings in lighting projects, and many more. The award will enable Mr. Rajan to extend his research scope towards improving the earthquake structural safety in New Zealand (the research will be done in collaboration with Massey University and Unitec Institute of Technology).
The IEEE I&M Society is an important and integral part of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), which is the world’s largest and most influential professional engineering institution with over 400 000 membership around the globe. This is the third time the excellence in research, development and education at the School of Engineering of Monash University has been highly acknowledged by the IEEE. In 2014 Associate Professor Melanie Ooi was named the IEEE Young Engineer of the Year while in 2012 the same Monash team won the Faculty Course Development Award along with colleagues from RMIT.
This continuing recognition from the world's leading professional body is a testament to the highest level of R&D and academic activities curried out at Monash University Malaysia, as well as the superior quality of the academic staff and students at the University.
