Are you ready to build your first autonomous robot?

The Divertible Path-Tracking Robots Challenge invites teams composed of 4 secondary school students to design and program an autonomous mobile robot capable of following a predefined path while making intelligent navigation decisions at multiple intersections.

As shown in this video, teams will construct and program an autonomous robot to follow a 3 cm-wide black colored line on a track that also involves intersections until it reaches its destination square. Prior to each intersection on the path of the robot, a square marker of size 5 cm x 5 cm will be positioned on either the left or right side of the line leading up to the intersection. The direction in which the robot turns at each intersection should match the side of the line at which the most recent marker was detected. For example, in the video recording, the robot always detects markers on the right side of the line and thereby keeps moving in a loop by turning right at each intersection encountered.

Participants will first attend a hands-on preliminary workshop at Monash University Malaysia where they learn how to construct the robot and program its basic functionalities. At the workshop, each student team will be provided a competition kit that contains all the items required to construct and program the robot. In addition, a track of this layout will be provided to student teams so that they could further improve the design and functionalities of the robot to complete the path from source to destination on the track. However, the robot will be tested on an undisclosed track on the competition day.

Competition Rules

  1. Each participating school will nominate a team of 4 students who will compete as a team and represent the school at the competition.
  2. Once the undisclosed track is made visible to teams on the competition day, teams will no longer be allowed to further manipulate the design of the robot or the program used to operate the robot.
  3. Each team will be allowed a maximum time of 10 minutes on the competition day to run their robot on the undisclosed track.
  4. The team that manages to follow all the directional markers correctly on the track from source to destination in the shortest time will be declared the winner.
  5. Teams are only allowed to use the components provided in the competition kit to construct and program the robot.
