Dr Song Cher Pin
Personal statement
Cher Pin is a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering Discipline, Monash University Malaysia. He obtained his Ph.D. degree majoring in Chemical Engineering from Monash University Malaysia. Upon completion of his Ph.D. study, he worked as Research Fellow at Monash before joining as a lecturer. His research interest has always been revolving around the development of sustainable and green processes for chemicals production. Cher Pin has successfully published multiple ISI-indexed journals and secured several research funding.

Research Projects
Title: Biodiesel Production From Low-Quality Lipid Feedstock Using Enzymatic Route
This project aims to establish an enzymatic reaction to convert low-value waste oil into biodiesel. Typically, the low-quality lipid feedstocks contain high free fatty acids (FFA) and water content, which will be converted to soap during the conventional alkaline transesterification process, reducing the overall product yield. The use of enzyme as biocatalyst has emerged as an alternative route for biodiesel production from low-quality raw material since enzyme is generally insensitive to FFA and water. More importantly, the enzymatic reaction can be operated under mild conditions. These benefits contribute to a cleaner production of biodiesel. By adopting this approach, not only the waste cooking oil can be properly managed to avoid health hazards and environmental pollution, it can also provide clean and renewable fuel to power vehicles and generate electricity. It is anticipated that the findings of the proposed study will promote the awareness of the importance of energy sustainability by converting the waste into energy, which is well-aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
