Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (New students)
Tuition Fee Waiver and/or Stipend
All Monash Malaysia graduate research students in the following categories:
- New graduate research students enrolling to Monash Malaysia
- Current graduate research students at Monash Malaysia in their first year of enrolment
Each scholarship comes with a full tuition fee waiver and monthly stipend of MYR2,850 as follows:
- Research master’s degree - Two years full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement.
- Doctoral degree - Three years and six months full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission; whichever is earlier.
- Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or it's equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia.
- Applicants must meet the minimum admission (academic and English language proficiency) and scholarship eligibility requirements as published on the website for the relevant research degree and be enrolled or provided an offer to study at Monash University Malaysia.
- The award of scholarships are based on an applicant’s academic record, research output and/or prior research experience.
- Applicants must not have completed a graduate research masters or doctoral degree at the same course level (for example, are applying to undertake a second doctoral degree).
- Applicants who receive a scholarship/financial assistance from an external sponsor(s) must obtain prior approval from the Scholarship office. The Scholarship office will confirm that there are no contradictory conditions from the sponsors. Consent from both MUM and sponsor(s) is required.
- Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.
Applicants must initiate the course application process through the respective School. All applications consistent with the eligibility and selection criteria will be considered for a scholarship.

Graduate research students receiving the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship are required to contribute a maximum of 10 hours per week in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the managing School.

Graduate Research Tuition Fee Waiver Scholarship (New students)
All Monash Malaysia graduate research students in the following categories:
- New graduate research students enrolling to Monash Malaysia
- Current graduate research students at Monash Malaysia in their first year of registration
Either a 50%, 75% or 100% tuition fee waiver up to the duration stated below:
- Research master’s degree - Two years full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement.
- Doctoral degree - Three years, six months full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission; whichever is earlier.
- Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of Second Class Honours (H2A) or it's equivalence (H2AE) recognised by Monash University.
- Applicants must not have completed a graduate research masters or doctoral degree at the same course level (for example, are applying to undertake a second doctoral degree).
- Applicants who receive a scholarship/financial assistance from an external sponsor(s) must obtain prior approval from the Scholarship office. The Scholarship office will confirm that there are no contradictory conditions from the sponsors. Consent from both MUM and sponsor(s) is required.
- Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

Current Monash Malaysia graduate research students progressing from expired externally funded grants.
Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS)
Tuition Fee Waiver and/or Stipend
The Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) program features regional mobility and is awarded to highly qualified students seeking to work on projects of regional and global relevance.
Recipients of GEMS will be funded for an immersive year in Monash University (Australia) of up to 12 months and have access to Monash University’s global network of research expertise and infrastructure during their candidature period.
A total of 15 GEMS are available for 2024. Visit the GEMS website for more information on GEMS.
- Malaysian and International students are eligible.
Each scholarship comes with:
- 100% tuition fee waiver for three years and six months.
- The period in Malaysia: a monthly stipend of RM 2,850 for 30 months.
- The period in Australia: a monthly stipend of RM 8,500 for up to 12 months
- A grant to cover travel and initial cost of living expenses in Australia.
- Applicants must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash Malaysia.
- Other eligibility requirements apply and will be published in due course.
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

- Personal statement on why you think you are suited for the GEMS program (300 words)

- Global Excellence and Mobility Scholarship (GEMS) recipients are required to contribute a maximum of 10 hours per week in academic support and/or research support activities as determined by the managing School.
- GEMS recipients must commence their mobility term in Australia no later than 18 months from their course commencement date.
- GEMS recipients must commence in the year the scholarship is awarded. For example, a candidate is being interviewed for the 2024 intake and is awarded the scholarship, the successful candidate must be enrolled in the PhD program by 31 December 2024.
EngIT Teaching and Research Scholarship
Tuition Fee Waiver and/or Stipend
The graduate research student (GRS) supported by this scholarship (i.e. T&R Scholar) is expected to contribute in a formal teaching and gain a record of teaching experience.
- Contribute an average of ten (10) hours of teaching related activities per week, including eight (8) contact hours in tutorial or lab sessions during teaching periods of semesters. Lecturing is possible for an outstanding candidate.
- Engage in other teaching related activities, such as marking during the examination period, etc.
- Teaching duties will be assigned for two semesters per year.
- Attend training in teaching workshops provided by the School and University, and meet the minimum performance standard (SETU).
- The teaching assignment will be managed by Deputy HoS (Education) in School of Engineering or Associate HoS (Education) in School of Information Technology respectively.
Applications are open in April and December, every year. Successful applicants must submit formal application for PhD before March or July of the academic year.
Each scholarship comes with the following for up to three years and six months full-time equivalent from the date of course commencement until the scholarship end date or upon thesis submission; whichever is earlier:
- 100% tuition fee waiver; and
- Monthly stipend of RM3,640
- The applicant must meet the entry requirements for PhD studies, and meet the eligibility for the Campus Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (link), which includes H1/H1E from their Bachelor degree.
- In addition, the applicant must also possess a Master degree (by coursework or research) in a relevant discipline (engineering, computer science or information technology), and be able to obtain a Teaching Permit from the Ministry of Higher Education*.
- The application is open to Malaysians only.
- The main supervisor for the PhD study must be first engaged before submitting an application.
- Prior experience in teaching is not mandatory but an advantage.
*Candidates without a Masters degree but are able to obtain a teaching permit from MOHE to teach undergraduate students could be considered.
The T&R Scholars are expected to teach tutorials and labs in year 1 units and some year 2 units related to the disciplines, in the following areas:

- Every application must be submitted with the following documents:
a. Updated resume
b. Degree Certificates (Bachelor and Master)
c. Academic Transcripts with grading scales
d. Research output (publications, patents, and etc.)
e. Two referee letters
f. Research Proposal
g. Support Letter by the Main Supervisor from the respective School - Applications must be submitted using the form provided by the School.
- Only applications with complete supporting documents will be processed.
- Only shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview.
- The final decision of the application will be made by the Head of School (HoS).
