YES. It is mandatory for all international students to record their attendance.
The Ministry of Higher Education and the Immigration Department of Malaysia requires all international students to maintain a minimum of 80% attendance and a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 50 at all times.
On a quarterly basis, the University is required to report on attendance and academic results of all international students to the Ministry of Higher Education. Given the Attendance System generates reports for your attendance rate on a weekly basis, you will receive an email notification if your attendance rate drops below the minimum threshold of 80% or are absent for three or more consecutive days from teaching and learning activities.
The Immigration Department of Malaysia relies on your attendance records and academic results in facilitating the renewal of your student pass. Meeting the minimum attendance requirement is therefore necessary failing which your student pass may not be approved for renewal by the Immigration Department of Malaysia.
Monash Malaysia is also required to report to the Police Department and Immigration Department of Malaysia on students who do not attend enrolled classes for three or more consecutive days.
Note:
- Submission of relevant documents (eg. medical certificates, flight tickets in the event of emergencies, etc.) or other legitimate justification for not meeting the minimum 80% attendance requirement/not attending classes for three or more consecutive days should be done via the Attendance System within 5 working days upon receiving the email notification.
- You should retain your original medical certificate and other supporting documents in the event these are required from you for purposes of verification by the authorities.
