What you'll need
- the link to the eAssessment platform
- a smartphone (with a QR code reader, camera and data)
- materials for handwritten answers, in case they are required as part of your eExam:
- a blue or black pen, or HB or 2B pencil
- blank A4 paper
- a smartphone to take photos of your answers and upload them
- a desktop or laptop computer with working webcam and microphone to communicate with your online supervisor. You won't be allowed to sit your supervised eExam if the online supervisor can’t see or hear you.
Setting up your exam space
You’ll need a space where you can sit your eExam under exam conditions (conditions that are very similar to what you’d expect in an assessment venue).
You’ll need a quiet private room with a door. We suggest that you let your friends and family know that you’re sitting your exam and require a private quiet space for the duration of the eExam. Put a sign on your door asking people to come back later and turn your voicemail on.
The room must have good lighting, but light must not shine directly onto your webcam.
If you have a closed-book exam:
- remove all study materials from the room
- ensure there are no stickers, notes or writing on your computer device
- if you have dual monitors, remove one of the monitors: you’re only allowed to use one monitor in the exam
- ensure nothing is on the floor under your desk.
You’ll need to upload photographs of your exam space when instructed by your online supervisor.
During the exam
- the door must be closed
- no one is allowed to enter your room
- background noise must be kept to a minimum
What to do on the day
- Get your computer and room ready well before your exam so you’re feeling confident and prepared.
- Check with your lecturer if any additional materials have been authorised for your exam so you have them ready to use.
- You’ll be asked to photograph your room to ensure you’re working under exam conditions. For details, see photographing your room and eExam rules.
- 30 minutes before your exam is due to start, connect with your Monash online supervisor:
- Log into the eExam platform using your Monash username and password.
- Navigate to your unit’s eExam – you may not be able to see the eExam link in the platform until two business days before your scheduled exam. Copy the eExam link and paste it into an Incognito Window in Google Chrome (you’ll be prompted to log in again).
You’ll then be guided to connect with your online supervisor in a virtual waiting room. - Wait for your supervisor to meet and greet you.
Make sure you’re ready to show the supervisor your ID and exam environment.
- Start your eExam. If you need to speak to your supervisor, use the eVigilation web chat function, or click the Raise hand button on the eVigilation window and your online supervisor will attend to you as soon as they can. Simply speak into your microphone/camera.
- If your exam requires you to download then upload a file, you must upload your file(s) during your exam as you can’t do this once your exam has been submitted.
- Submit your eExam. Once you’ve submitted your eExam, or your exam time finishes, you must stop writing any paper-based answers.
- If your exam requires handwritten answers, you’ll need to show your answer sheets to your webcam, one by one. Just follow the instructions on your screen.
- Use your smartphone to take and upload photos of your answer sheets. You’ll need to scan the QR code on screen, then follow the instructions on your computer and smartphone to take and upload your photos (to see how it works, try a general knowledge practice exam).
- Review all your photos on screen to ensure they are clear. Once all your photos are confirmed, your eExam is complete. Your supervisor will check that everything is okay and then end the exam session recording. You can then close your browser tab.
